Social Media

Social media is merely an extension of our communicative boundaries. Social media sites serve as a platform to learn and explore the culture and way of life of people from all across the globe. It has the potential to offer a great deal of knowledge about anything and this is one of the predominant reasons why social media users have increased in an unimaginable pace globally. Social media is a platform which helps to exchange emotions, ideas and spread happiness. It has the ability to influence people and change their lives. It is used to advertise and endorse commercial products, movies, reality shows, gossips, political news, business news etc. With unlimited uses, social media greatly influences our daily life. An example from life is the Nirbhaya rape and murder case which made history, with thousands of people supporting her on a national level. Facebook, twitter, instagram, whatsapp and every other major networking site helped in unifying these masses at the time and as a result it rewrote the laws for rapists. Social media keeps our humanity alive, and offers the opportunity to realise the same. Such an incident is when common people helped each other out in the midst of a hurricane and storm, when the destruction was catastrophic. Social media can also make a celebrity in no time. Three days was all it took for a thirty second video of an actress to be labelled the national crush of India. She currently holds the record for collecting more instagram followers in a day, in India. She instantly became a celebrity and enjoyed the status that actresses have experienced over the years.

The risks associated with using social network are well-documented. The biggest concern of using social networking sites is to do with the privacy of its users.
Cyber bullying is a very big problem in social networking. According to the “DO SOMETHING” org., survey, 70% of students report having witnessed frequent bullying online and over 40% have been victims of online bullying themselves.
Social networks can be used for trolling, the act of intentionally posting controversial messages purely to upset or anger other users. Almost a third of the millennium has admitted to engaging in trolling.
Stalking via social media is startlingly common. As 63% of Facebook profiles are public, it is very easy for other users to check the status of the other person. Often, we do not know who’s viewing our profile and they do not know what would happen next. Over 80% of the stalking incidents are never reported to the authorities.
It has been known that thieves use social media to look for potential opportunities. This is because more than 60% of the users post something about their travel plans like a photo form the airport or check in at the hotel etc. effectively helping burglars seize the opportunity.
Social networking, with the exception of professional networks is mostly aimed towards personal use as a casual, leisurely activity. However, social media addiction may be hampering work productivity when they are at work. Employees who surf the net instead of doing work could be costing their employers millions of dollars in lost productivity.
Even though social media can be a great tool for fostering relationships with other people, it can also be a source of relationship problems. Increase in Facebook usage is co-related with higher divorce rates.
Ironically online social networking can also lead to a sense of isolation in real life as users may disengage from real human interaction. Family members staring at their smartphones at dinner instead of talking with one another at the table is a common site these days. The more time a person spends on Facebook, particularly with passive interactions, the greater their feeling of loneliness.
People have become more inclined to use short-hand abbreviations and teachers complain that students’ writing has become worse and that the internet and social networking has resulted in the loss of vocabulary.
The excessive use of social networking sites leads to mental and physical health issues. People do not have proper meals and do not take enough rest. They consume a lot of coffee and tea to stay awake and remain active on these sites. They become lethargic and de-motivated to connect with people in person. Parents should keep a check on their children’s social networking usage and should advice them on the appropriate age to use it and its limitations. Teachers in school should also teach their students the hazards of social networking and the fact that they are losing out in the real world by sticking to these social networking sites.
